About this artwork:

Mr. Monopoly on Cross is an original 49 × 38 cm Pop Art work on paper by contemporary artist Kristin Kossi, using satire to explore money, capitalism and the relentless pursuit of financial success.

In a provocative reinterpretation of the familiar board-game character, Mr. Monopoly appears in a cruciform position against references to Wall Street and the financial world. A figure traditionally associated with property, wealth and winning the game is suddenly placed in a position of sacrifice. The contradiction is deliberate.

Is Mr. Monopoly being sacrificed by the system he represents or has money itself become something we worship?

Through this collision of financial and religious symbolism, Kossi plays with the complicated relationship between ambition, wealth and personal sacrifice. The work raises questions about how far we are willing to go in pursuit of financial success, and what may be lost when accumulation becomes an end in itself.

Created with acrylic, spray paint and collage on cardboard paper, the raw surface and layered urban elements reinforce the tension within the composition. Familiar imagery is disrupted through graffiti-inspired marks and fragments of contemporary culture, giving the relatively intimate work a confrontational presence.

Darkly humorous and deliberately ambiguous, Mr. Monopoly on Cross turns one of popular culture’s most recognizable symbols of wealth into a reflection on the price of the money game.

When money becomes the religion, what are we willing to sacrifice?

My work explores freedom in its many forms through pop culture, ambition, nature and the choices that shape the way we live. In my Pop Art, familiar characters and cultural symbols become a language for exploring success, money, love, independence and the contradictions of contemporary life. Icons such as Scrooge McDuck, Mr. Monopoly, Bugs Bunny and Homer Simpson are removed from their familiar narratives and placed into new ones sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, but always reflecting something about the world we live in and what we choose to value. Alongside this, my abstract work has evolved through a closer connection to nature. Living and working between wild landscapes in South Africa has shifted my perspective from the symbols of success toward something more elemental — land, time, movement, solitude and the freedom that comes from living closer to nature. What connects these seemingly different bodies of work is a continuing search for freedom. Freedom to succeed. Freedom to question. Freedom to change. And ultimately, freedom to live life on your own terms. I believe art can shift perspective. For me, creativity is not only a way of making images, but a way of understanding life — and continually redefining what truly matters.
