About the Artwork:

The Future Is AI is an original 71 × 71 cm Pop Art painting by contemporary artist Kristin Kossi, bringing together artificial intelligence, money and one of popular culture’s most recognizable symbols of business instinct: Scrooge McDuck.

Walking through the lively streets of Duckburg alongside his accountant, Scrooge appears immersed in a conversation about the possibilities of artificial intelligence. For a character who has built an empire by recognizing opportunity, AI represents the next frontier — a technology capable of reshaping business, creativity and the way society works.

Created through bold color, urban Pop Art elements and layered collage, the painting captures both the excitement and momentum surrounding technological change. Familiar cartoon imagery meets one of the defining subjects of our time, creating a playful collision between nostalgia and the future.

At the heart of the work lies a question characteristic of Kossi’s recurring exploration of money, success and opportunity: What happens when the world’s most famous billionaire encounters a technology that could redefine all three?

Scrooge, unsurprisingly, seems ready to find out.

Rather than presenting technology as an abstract concept, The Future Is AI places it directly within the familiar language of ambition and enterprise. AI becomes another tool whose value ultimately depends on what we choose to create with it — opening possibilities for innovation, economic opportunity and new ways of thinking.

Playful and optimistic without losing its irony, the work captures a moment in which the future no longer feels distant.

It has already arrived.

My work explores freedom in its many forms through pop culture, ambition, nature and the choices that shape the way we live. In my Pop Art, familiar characters and cultural symbols become a language for exploring success, money, love, independence and the contradictions of contemporary life. Icons such as Scrooge McDuck, Mr. Monopoly, Bugs Bunny and Homer Simpson are removed from their familiar narratives and placed into new ones sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, but always reflecting something about the world we live in and what we choose to value. Alongside this, my abstract work has evolved through a closer connection to nature. Living and working between wild landscapes in South Africa has shifted my perspective from the symbols of success toward something more elemental — land, time, movement, solitude and the freedom that comes from living closer to nature. What connects these seemingly different bodies of work is a continuing search for freedom. Freedom to succeed. Freedom to question. Freedom to change. And ultimately, freedom to live life on your own terms. I believe art can shift perspective. For me, creativity is not only a way of making images, but a way of understanding life — and continually redefining what truly matters.
