About the Artwork:
Mr. Monopoly Capitalist is an original 40 × 50 cm Pop Art work on paper by contemporary artist Kristin Kossi, bringing together money, business and one of popular culture’s most recognizable symbols of wealth and capitalism.
At the center of the composition, the familiar Monopoly-inspired character enters Kossi’s colorful urban world of money symbolism, vintage comics, graffiti and expressive paint. Playful on the surface, the work reflects our fascination with wealth, ambition and the game of getting ahead.
The title Mr. Monopoly Capitalist plays with the character’s long-standing association with property, ownership and financial success. In the world of Monopoly, accumulating assets is quite literally the objective of the game. Transferred into contemporary Pop Art, that familiar imagery becomes a humorous reflection on the way money, status and success continue to shape modern culture.
Created with acrylic, aerosol and vintage comic collage on cardboard paper, the artwork combines raw, spontaneous marks with fragments of printed popular culture. Layers of color, text and imagery give the relatively intimate format the visual energy of Kossi’s larger Pop Art works.
Rather than offering a judgment on wealth or capitalism, Mr. Monopoly Capitalist embraces the ambiguity of its famous protagonist, businessman, property owner, winner, opportunist and enduring symbol of the money game.

My work explores freedom in its many forms through pop culture, ambition, nature and the choices that shape the way we live. In my Pop Art, familiar characters and cultural symbols become a language for exploring success, money, love, independence and the contradictions of contemporary life. Icons such as Scrooge McDuck, Mr. Monopoly, Bugs Bunny and Homer Simpson are removed from their familiar narratives and placed into new ones sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, but always reflecting something about the world we live in and what we choose to value. Alongside this, my abstract work has evolved through a closer connection to nature. Living and working between wild landscapes in South Africa has shifted my perspective from the symbols of success toward something more elemental — land, time, movement, solitude and the freedom that comes from living closer to nature. What connects these seemingly different bodies of work is a continuing search for freedom. Freedom to succeed. Freedom to question. Freedom to change. And ultimately, freedom to live life on your own terms. I believe art can shift perspective. For me, creativity is not only a way of making images, but a way of understanding life — and continually redefining what truly matters.
