About the Artwork:

Mr. Monopoly Money Maker is an original 42 × 59 cm Pop Art work on paper by contemporary artist Kristin Kossi, bringing together Mr. Monopoly, money and one of the most recognizable references in Pop Art history.

Seated confidently on an Andy Warhol-inspired soup can, Mr. Monopoly holds up a bag of money as if wealth itself had become the product on display. The unlikely combination connects the visual language of consumer culture with a character synonymous with property, business and financial success.

The soup can references Pop Art’s fascination with transforming everyday commercial objects into art, while Mr. Monopoly introduces Kossi’s recurring themes of money, ambition and the pursuit of success. Together, the familiar symbols are rearranged into a playful contemporary narrative about what we consume, what we desire and the value we attach to wealth.

Created with acrylic, aerosol and vintage comic collage on cardboard paper, the work combines expressive graffiti-inspired marks with fragments of printed popular culture. Its raw paper surface and layered composition give the piece an urban character while retaining the bold immediacy of classic Pop Art.

Playful and deliberately ironic, Mr. Monopoly Money Maker brings together art history, popular culture and the language of money turning a familiar soup can into a different kind of commodity.

My work explores freedom in its many forms through pop culture, ambition, nature and the choices that shape the way we live. In my Pop Art, familiar characters and cultural symbols become a language for exploring success, money, love, independence and the contradictions of contemporary life. Icons such as Scrooge McDuck, Mr. Monopoly, Bugs Bunny and Homer Simpson are removed from their familiar narratives and placed into new ones sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, but always reflecting something about the world we live in and what we choose to value. Alongside this, my abstract work has evolved through a closer connection to nature. Living and working between wild landscapes in South Africa has shifted my perspective from the symbols of success toward something more elemental — land, time, movement, solitude and the freedom that comes from living closer to nature. What connects these seemingly different bodies of work is a continuing search for freedom. Freedom to succeed. Freedom to question. Freedom to change. And ultimately, freedom to live life on your own terms. I believe art can shift perspective. For me, creativity is not only a way of making images, but a way of understanding life — and continually redefining what truly matters.
