The Grass Is Greener Where You Water It! is an original 85 × 85 cm mixed-media Pop Art painting by contemporary artist Kristin Kossi, exploring success, growth and the idea that what we invest in is ultimately what has the chance to flourish.
Dressed in a dapper velvet suit, complete with tie and cigar, Scrooge McDuck stands outside his modern home, watering the lawn. A classic dark blue Porsche 911 is parked nearby, a quiet symbol of achievement and timeless luxury. But this is no ordinary garden: instead of flowers, green dollar bills begin to grow from the grass beneath his feet.
The familiar saying “The grass is greener where you water it” becomes both literal and symbolic. Rather than looking at what someone else has, Scrooge tends to his own ground. The act of watering becomes a playful metaphor for focus, investment and creating your own success.
The house, the classic Porsche and the growing money suggest that success has already arrived, yet Scrooge is still watering. In Kossi’s characteristic visual language, wealth is not presented simply as something to possess, but as something built and cultivated over time.

My work explores freedom in its many forms through pop culture, ambition, nature and the choices that shape the way we live. In my Pop Art, familiar characters and cultural symbols become a language for exploring success, money, love, independence and the contradictions of contemporary life. Icons such as Scrooge McDuck, Mr. Monopoly, Bugs Bunny and Homer Simpson are removed from their familiar narratives and placed into new ones sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, but always reflecting something about the world we live in and what we choose to value. Alongside this, my abstract work has evolved through a closer connection to nature. Living and working between wild landscapes in South Africa has shifted my perspective from the symbols of success toward something more elemental — land, time, movement, solitude and the freedom that comes from living closer to nature. What connects these seemingly different bodies of work is a continuing search for freedom. Freedom to succeed. Freedom to question. Freedom to change. And ultimately, freedom to live life on your own terms. I believe art can shift perspective. For me, creativity is not only a way of making images, but a way of understanding life — and continually redefining what truly matters.
